ABOUT US

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that, “The most appropriate approach to minimize the presence of pharmaceuticals in drinking-water and reduce human exposure is to prevent or reduce their entry into the water environment as far as reasonably practical.” We can work towards this by increasing public awareness of this issue and improving access to drug drop-off locations.

As stated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), one way that pharmaceuticals enter our water is when they are flushed down the toilet. Many people are aware of Drug Take Back Day and other similar events, where they can drop off unused and expired prescription drugs rather than flushing them down the toilet. Most individuals, however, are not aware that there are year-round drop-off locations for their unused medications as well. P.W.A.D.'s goal is to make more communities aware of this issue and improve access to proper medication disposal sites.
